+Service design project with intuit+

GOAL: To come up with an easy, personal, and fun way for millennials and gig-economy workers to begin saving for their retirement funds.

COntext: This was my design research project during my San Francisco Bay Area Immersion experience, a program that taught design principles and application. Partnering with the financial and business software company, Intuit, my team created a group investment app that would act as a fun and accessible way for people of all job statuses to save money with their friends.

TYPE: Coding, Graphic Design, Animation

DATES: January 2017 to April 2017

+PROJECT BACKGRound+

My team’s 10 week Service Design Challenge was centered around getting young people to start saving for retirement. As college students who are so busy worrying about grades and getting our very first job, the idea of retirement was completely foreign to my team. Intuit fielded any questions or concerns that we had regarding the retirement space.

+WHY ARE YOUNG PEOPLE NOT SAVING FOR RETIREMENT EARLIER+

After going out in the field and interviewing working young adults at local SF cafes, we came up with the problem statement: Because of tight-budgets, inexperience in long-term savings, and lack of access to retirement benefits, millennial workers and workers in the Gig Economy are not starting to save for retirement early enough.

On the left is a presentation compiling our research findings.

+MY ROLE+

I personally contributed my Adobe Illustrator skills to produce consistent presentation designs in line with Intuit’s brand image as well as our own project’s.

As a team, we consolidated and organized our research findings by creating journey maps, personas, service blueprints, and storyboards.

+THE PROCESS+

We initially conducted online research to learn about different retirement options such as 401K’s and IRA’s. Then, we conducted interviews at coffee shops to ask young adults what they were doing to prepare for retirement, if at all.

Our research made us realize that people's ideas of retirement were very different, and that young adults felt very overwhelmed by retirement saving as a whole. In response to this, we decided it was paramount that our solution reframed retirement as a more relevant topic for young people: as saving for the long term.

+WHAT WE MADE+

My team came up with W.I.N., or “We Invest Now,” a social group investing platform that allows users to invest in stocks with their friends and family, and then place those earnings towards their short-term and long-term saving goals. W.I.N.'s main purpose is to make saving money an accessible, social, and fun endeavor rather than a chore.

+OUR FINAL PRESENTATION+

In our presentation to Intuit, we described our greatest findings: that young people viewed retirement as something only "old people" needed to worry about, and that young people wanted an easy way to begin saving for retirement.

Intuit appreciated our insight in the need to reframe the way young people think about retirement. They also saw great potential in developing our application with new features in the future.
