+K-Sound LOGO REBOOT+

GOAL: To revamp an outdated logo for K-Sound, a Korean indie music radio show.

COntext: After joining K-Sound as a DJ and show member, I noticed that the logo needed some work. I offered to redesign the logo in my own free time. I also kept in mind the possibility of producing stickers when creating my design.

TYPE: Graphic Design, Logo, Branding

DATES: April 2017 to May 2017

+THE OLD DESIGN+

The old K-Sound logo had an unfittingly childish look due to its blockish font. In addition, nothing about the logo seemed to represent K-Sound's Korean cultural roots other than the color red. These two points dictated the direction I took in my new design: 1. to stray away from the cartoonish look, and 2. to convey K-Sound's Korean identity.

+IDEATION+

No matter the project, I'm a firm believer in ideating the old-fashioned way: sketching things out on paper. Through this step, I got my creative juices flowing and came up with a multitude of possible directions. Then, I transferred the rough sketches over to Illustrator. After gathering feedback from the radio members, we all felt attached to the robot design.

+FACIAL EXPRESSION & SHAPES+

After narrowing down my design idea to a cute retro robot sporting the Korean flag symbol on his cheeks, I began experimenting with his facial expressions and background shapes. Through trial and error, I found that the original expression with uneven circle eyes and a grimacing, robotic smile gave off the playful and classic vibe that I wanted. As for the background shape, the circle seemed to be the most logical choice for printing out stickers.

+THE FINAL PRODUCT+

This is the final result! We have a robot listening to music through headphones spelling out "K-Sound", designed to resemble tangled up wiring. On each earphone side is a small red and blue lightning bolt as a throwback to the use of these colors to indicate which side was left or right. Finally, we have our bow to K-Sound's Korean roots through the robot's "Taeguk" cheeks that is also seen on the South Korean national flag.
